The big surprise this year was Henin. She was in top form - losing only to a determined Serena in the final. I have always loved her game (especially that backhand) and I loved her new more aggressive style of play. Once she get the kinks out of her game (esp, her serve), I see her taking a few more slams. She has the jenesaisquoi that exudes confidence on the court, much like the men’s champ this year. It was nice to see her take Serena to three. Serena still plays with her heart on her sleeve, but she looked good when it counted and came back from the precipice in a couple of her earlier matches. All in all, an entertaining women’s draw.

In the men’s side, observations: 1) Federer still has plenty of game in him, 2) Never count Fed out, especially in a final. Although DelP surprised him in the US Open final, that was an exception. A friend of mine picked Murray. I told him it was a big mistake to go against Fed, no one is tougher under pressure and Murray has come up against the glass slam ceiling. He can’t seem to bust out, and I predict no slams for him this season and two more for Fed. Cilic was exciting and who new Rodick still could come through in the clutch. Wonderful stuff. Rafa needs to get better before the dirt and I predict he’ll come through as champ. If he’s still ailing, look for a dark horse in Paris - ?Verdasco has your time come?

The most annoying aspect of the US Open Mens Final was the announcers on the Tennis Channel anointing Federer after Del Potro dropped the first set. He lost it by a break and it wasn’t as if he was completely blown out of the water. Anyway, Del Potro showed amazing poise and tenacity in his five set win. It’s great for tennis to have a new US Open champion on the men’s side this year. The way Del Potro won it by beating both Rafa and Fed was fantastic and the tennis he played was top notch. My only lament is that it looks like tennis is headed the way of basketball with the top athletes possessing pysical attributes that rule out just about all of us normally statured folks. After all, Del Potro is like 6′6″ tall. Oh well . . . I could have been a contender.

I’ll break my usual tradition of commenting on the men’s final here and give my 2 cents worth on Serena’s bazaar meltdown at the US Open against Kimmy Klijsters in the woman’s semi-final.

First: the call. To call a foot fault on a second serve two points away from match point is silly and nitpicky. I wish the lines-woman had just looked the other way. Was it a foot fault? I’m not sure from the TV replays. Her first serve on that point definitely looked like a foot fault though. I’m all for calling foot faults, after all, it’s in the rules and part of the game. That being said, the foot fault rule is the most selectively applied rule in tennis. If you’re going to enforce it, do so all of the time. To that end, a camera to record the foot fault and for players to challenge the call should be instituted if professional tennis wants to do it right. Until the rule is consistently applied, it should only be called on flagrant violations. Really, who cares as long as Serena wasn’t foot faulting by several inches, it gives absolutely no competitive advantage to the player. Bottom line: let ‘em play.

Next: Serena’s reaction. Serena should be completely embarrassed by her behavior, but she’s not and she won’t ever be, and I predict she’ll never even issue an apology. This is the same player who gives post-match interviews after defeats and refuses to credit her opponents. She’s a great player but not exactly imbued with class. It’s one thing to rant and complain about the call but to F-bomb the lines-woman and physically threaten her is over the line - way way over the line. I’ve always found it interesting that in addition to “rules”, tennis has a “code” to cover all of the eventualities not predicted by the rules. The code can be summed up basically as “Be nice, play fair, and stay in control of your behavior”. Tennis is supposed to be a civil sport but breeds bad behavior, mostly due to the frustration individuals experience playing the sport. Funny how tennis will bring out the worst in many competitors. That may be the reason for the code. Whatever view you subscribe to about the call, Serena’s reaction was terrible and can’t be condoned or ignored.

To that end:

• 1. Good for the umpire for docking her a point.
• 2. Bad for the referee for not defaulting her.
• 3. It’s horrible for tennis to have such behavior.

Serena should be fined and suspended for the rest of the season, and the fact that she’s being allowed to play in the doubles final shows that the officials at the USTA and the WTA don’t take their job too seriously either. (It’s ironic given the draconian drug laws enforced by professional tennis.) In any other sport, she’d be fined and suspended. Also by fine, I mean a real fine - a $10,500 fine is the equivalent of a $2 fine to us normal wage earners (she earned $350.000 for her semifinal loss alone). She should be forced to forfeit all of her winnings from the tournament. Her tirade reflects on what she really feels about tennis and her legacy. At a time when woman’s tennis is in a free fall - struggling with play quality and competitiveness - this is simply terrible for the sport. Despite her sometimes brilliant tennis, Serena keeps making it nearly impossible for the casual observer to be her fan.

My last thought is the “role model” argument. Pundits are expounding that as a top player, she’s a role model for up and coming girls playing the sport and her behavior sets a bad example. This may be true to some degree, but the real role models for younger players are their parents and coaches. If you’re a parent of an aspiring tennis player you should condemn Serena’s behavior, but more importantly you should choose coaches carefully and act appropriately on the court yourself.

The big surprise yesterday wasn’t that Federer won Wimbledon again. That was almost assured after Nadal withdrew for knee problems. The real surprise was Roddick. 16-14 in the final set? Are you kidding me? I was watching the match with my family, and the fifth set was unbelievable. Each time we said, “I’ve got a feeling this game is it. . . “, Roddick served his way out of trouble. The points lacked the artistry of last years final and the match was more of a serve slug fest, as most points were very short. Roddick’s serve kept him in the match consistently. Here’s something interesting though, for all of the attention Roddick’s serve gets, he had 27 aces on Sunday. Compare that to Federer’s 50 aces. In all fairness, Roddick had more service winners but Federer’s serve is perhaps the most underrated part of his game. Anyway, call it nerves, but Roddick blowing three set points in the second was painful to watch. Roddick also bungled two break points at 8-8 in the fifth. I feel for the guy, but he definitely had his chances. In the fifth set, Federer held his serve so easily that you knew it was just a matter of time until he found the opening. Who would think that it would take 30 games though?

Federer looked cool and collected throughout the match. As Roddick pointed out, he’s great at digging in his heels for the long haul if grinding out a match is what’s required. Alright, lets examine my predictions from last years Wimbledon post: “He will break fourteen slams, he will win the US Open in 2008 and he will go down as the greatest man to pick up a racquet.” Looks like I’m three for three there. With Federer, what’s not to like: gracious in victory and defeat, a true ambassador for the game, a picture of coolness and focused effort on the court, and perhaps the best rounded game we’ll ever see. Men’s tennis has clearly benefited from his dominance over the past five years, and especially the rivalry with Nadal, however, are will we see tennis suffer in the near future from hyper-Federer-emia? His Wimbledon outfits are getting ridiculous - this year he looked like a 1970’s James Bond villain with a gold lame man-purse:

Also give us a break on the constantly looping Rolex commercials before you start to look like Sharipova (for those who didn’t know: she was once a tennis player before she morphed into a sponsorship bulletin board and gave up playing).

It’s not good for pro tennis in general to have a relatively unknown new player at the top every week (a la women’s tennis). It makes it harder for fans to identify with players and really build a “relationship” with them and get to know their game. That being said, I’d like to see someone other than Nadal step up and challenge Federer. It’s not going to be Djokovic, the guy’s a major head case. Murray? He doesn’t really have it either. Who then? Roddick, well lets hope so. In the past Roddick has changed coaches like politicians change campaign promises - frequently and reliably. Maybe this match will give him the confidence he needs to be more of a consistent competitor.

Maybe, but in the end I doubt it. This year’s Wimbledon prediction: Federer will end his career with 20 Majors.

Well, the anti-climactic French Open is over. Federer won in straights - no surprise. He looked strong throughout the match and Soderling couldn’t seem to muster any of the magic that he had against Nadal

Most tennis fans I know are happy to see him finally win the French. It would have been a different final against Nadal. Word has it that Nadal’s knee is injured, so who knows what would have transpired had he made it to the finals. Also consider the heavy rain that fell during the trophy presentations. Had the match lasted much longer, it probably would have been postponed or at least delayed. Even so, tennis fans everywhere were collectively holding their breath for another Fed/Nadal match-up. Graceful in defeat, Nadal acknowledged that eventually, everyone is bound to loose at some point.

The person most important to Federer’s win today went unthanked for his efforts: Robin Soderling. Fed could have at least said, ” . . .and most importantly of all, I’d like to thank Robing Soderling for doing what I couldn’t over the past four years, beat Rafa on this court. Thanks Robin, I wouldn’t be here, holding this trophy up without your supreme effort last week.”

Anyway, congrats to Federer for completing a well deserved career slam. Kudos. There are some that speculate that this cements Federer as the greatest of all time. Perhaps he is, I don’t know. I really don’t know how we can compare tennis players in the pre-open, pre-synthetic racquet, pre-synthetic string, pre-million dollar paycheck era to those now. If we are to compare apples to apples, Federer goes up against Sampras as the dominant force in his time. Since Sampras has acknowledged that Federer is the best, I’ll have to take his word on it. That being said, I love Sampras’s game - huge serve, shoestring volley, overhead smash. It was certainly not as well rounded as Federer’s, but every bit as spectacular.

Fans also speculate that we’ll never see dominance like this again in the tennis world. I disagree. Somewhere right now there’s a seven year old hitting the ball against a garage wall who is destined to take the game to the next level.

Well, another Federer/Nadal final in the books. Here are my initial thoughts.

I’m not sure anyone can beat Nadal. It’s that simple. Men’s tennis, as it’s played in its highest forms at the end of majors, has become so physical that in the end it boils down to the competitor that can outlast his opponent. Look at what Rafa did in 5 sets less than 48 hours earlier. Verdasco played an amazing match (look out for him in the future), but he just couldn’t put Nadal away. The same is true of Federer. Both Rafa and Rodger have their blazing forehands but these matches aren’t as much about baseline or mid-court winners, there will be plenty of those from both players. What they are about is chasing down shots and making something happen with a return ball. In that department, Rafa dominates.

It was agonizing to watch Federer come apart in the 5th set, and even worse to watch his trophy acceptance. Again Rafa’s sportsmanship trumped that seen in any other sport. I gotta add though, I want to see Rafa free for some self-congratulatory reveling someday. It seems all of his victories against Fed and resulting Major wins are a little bittersweet what with the apologies and all.

Can Fed still best Sampras’ 14? Yeah, I think so, but at this point, nothing is a lock. Rafa will win the French and either Wimbledon or the US Open. Can Fed scoop up the extra one - especially with Murray et. al. breathing down his neck? Stay tuned.

Men’s tennis is the most exciting it’s ever been right now. (Aren’t they playing some kind of football game today?) Nadal vs. Federer is THE rivalry in sports right now. THE rivalry. Say what you want about others - i.e. Duke/NC, Yankees/Sox, USC/ND etc. - this one’s better. For example, no one challenges Tiger Woods usually, but Fed and Nadal continue to grind out 4 or 5 set classics. Even though Nadal leads head to head, the matches (with the exception of the French) are entertaining and at the absolute highest level of play. What other sport can boast that right now? The Arnold Palmer/Jack Nicklaus rivalry arguably brought golf to masses. Here’s hoping that Federer/Nadal will reinfuse tennis enthusiasm in this country.

When rivalry between two competitors at the pinnacle of their sport occurs, it rarely lives up to the pre-game hype. It’s over-analyzed and, with only a few notable exceptions, never quite materializes to be the epic battle anticipated. Often we come away dwelling on interesting moments of play, but having to squint and cock our heads to convince ourselves that the match up resembled anything it was supposed to. This, however, never stops the pundits from declaring the result as the “greatest game ever”. In the light of day, it almost never is.

This simply was not so with regard to the anticipated match up in the Mens Final at Wimbledon in 2008. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal met in the Wimbledon Championship on Centre Court and gave sports fans a memorable battle - one that will leave an indelible mark on tennis and sport in general. It was a storybook match up, the world number one and five time successive champion versus the previously vanquished but rising star in the sport. The grass court titan versus the clay specialist. It was David versus Goliath, only David had been beaten twice previously and returned with huge biceps and better sling skills. As a sideline, the match was rife with records to be broken. Whether it was to be the most successive championships won in Federer’s case, inching him closer to the magic number fifteen for most slams won, or the first French Open/Wimbledon sweep in almost thirty years and first Spaniard in almost forty to win for Nadal.

Whatever pre-match hype you subscribed to, this match blew it into orbit. We knew this was going to be a set-your-alarm, phone-off-the-hook, kids-at-the-neighbors match, but no one anticipated what we saw. Smooth elegance, tectonic effort, unpretentious class, mental clarity, venerated tradition, and unbelievable athleticism blended into almost five hours of brilliant tennis. In the tennis world this will be a “Where were you when . . .?” match.

One of the many beautiful aspects of tennis is how intensely private and public it is at the same time. In front of 15,000 fans, players have got to keep their focus and composure to be successful. Other individual sports share this similarity, but none require the nano-second reflexes tennis does. Golf players get as long as they need to muster their confidence and hit a shot. In tennis, the result of this private focus is publicly evident in less than a second, and there’s no time for second-guessing, the next shot is already on its way back. That being said, Nadal and Federer bared their souls before the crowd gathered on center court. With no words necessary, they laid out for all every bit of effort they could summon from within, then somehow found more. They focused every molecule of emotion on every shot for almost five hours. Everyone watching was exhausted by the end as well. With matches like this, it’s less a matter of who gave more or even who wins. It’s simply enough to marvel at the complete devotion these individuals had to the competition and the new level of tennis that emerged from their duel. The match was much more than the sum of the participants. Something special happened on Centre Court and in the final calculation, a new standard had been set for excellence and effort.

Wimbledon has done a commendable job of changing with the times while preserving some of the mystique rooted in tradition. Slower grass courts mean longer points and less advantage for Samprasesque serve and volleyers. Hawk-eye line calling has also been added. Perhaps the biggest change will occur next year with the use of a retractable roof on center court. Thus the 2008 Wimbledon Championship was notable for the final three rain delays on Centre Court - tennis in three acts if you will.

In the first act Nadal leapt to a two set lead - feat in and of itself against Federer at Wimbledon. Federer stared across the court at him as if to say - “You’re hot now, but give me an opening and I’ll begin my methodical deconstruction of you”. How many times have we seen Federer find an opening, hit the gas, and speed away with the match against a stunned and dejected opponent? It was not to be in the 2008 Wimbledon Final. Only by his own sheer mental and physical fortitude, was Federer able to rally back to even the match at two sets all. His coolness, saving two match points, was pure Federer. Nadal was not to yield though, mentally or physically.

At two all in the deciding fifth set, the rain came back. It was as if the tennis gods were reminding us how savory our fare was, and how we should pause to remember the image for just a little longer. When play resumed, the final act ensued. In the end, Nadal found an opening and broke Federer and then held serve to take the match. In the fading Wimbledon light, Nadal lay prostrate on the battle scared grass - emotionally and physically spent. They had packed every second possible with beautiful tennis and eked out a result before darkness totally ensued and the curtain closed forever on Centre Court’s twilight battles.

Both competitors were gracious and humble in their discussions of the result. While Federer acknowledged that the loss hurt, Nadal publicly consoled him as still being the top player. There was no gloating, no screaming, and no lawnmower fist pumps. Instead there was a serene understanding on the part of Federer and Nadal that they had produced something entirely bigger than they could have expected. Their glances to each other said it all - the certainty that their effort would be enshrined in sports lore forever.

Centre Court at Wimbledon seems newly consecrated, and tennis has a new champion. All that being said, don’t look for Federer to fade into the mist. Perhaps he is proverbially down two sets now after losing in the French and Wimbledon, but hasn’t his hallmark has been his ability to find another gear - to summon further brilliance from deep within - and come out on top? He will break fourteen slams, he will win the US Open in 2008 and he will go down as the greatest man to pick up a racquet. However, now Nadal will be forever linked to Federer as a primary force behind his greatness. And every time Federer’s name is uttered as the greatest of all time, Nadal will also be in the sentence as the reason for his accomplishment.

Recently someone asked me if I had a mnemonic for remembering the cranial nerves, you know the Olfactory, Optic, Occulomotor, Trochlear, Trigeminal, Abducens, Facial, Vestibulocochlear, Glossopharyngeal, Vagus, Accessory, and Hypoglossal Nerves.

The best one I’ve ever heard, and one that’s family friendly, was coined by Mike Markowitz in medical school. I like it because it incorporates the first TWO (or three) letters of the nerves:

Well, I promised more details, so here they are. The guys and Aubs took tennis this summer. They loved it and every Friday ended with a water fight. Good clean (and wet) fun!!

Has summer really come and gone? What the heck! I feel like I didn’t get anything done. Well, here are some highlights:

1) Summer sports with the kids - especially swimming and tennis
2) Trip to see Heidi’s folks in Kansas
3) Hiking with the family to First Meadows on Elk Creek
4) Reconnecting with my old friend RS
5) Fishing the Conejos
6) Making it through a whole summer of taking care of the yard
